  • Schools to close for TT fortnight in 2019

Isle of Man News POSTED Thu 03-11-2016

Schools to close for TT fortnight in 2019

by LC

School holiday dates for 2018/19 have been published by the Department of Education and Children.

The holidays include two weeks off for pupils for TT 2019 – as happened most recently in 2015. Staff will undertake training during TT practice week.

Graham Cregeen MHK , Minister for Education and Children, said: ‘The Department publishes holidays well in advance to enable busy parents to plan. We consult closely with schools and professional associations over the dates.

‘Inevitably, roads are busy during TT and this affects journeys to and from schools, even those not on the TT course, so in considering our holiday pattern for 2018/19, we opted to close schools for the whole fortnight.

‘In addition, we believe parents will welcome the opportunity to take a break at a time when most UK schools are open and therefore the cost of travel may be cheaper.’

The Minister said: ‘Parents with children taking external examinations during TT 2019 are reminded that the dates are set by UK boards and exams will continue through TT.’

Schools will be closed to pupils from Friday 2nd to Friday 9th June inclusive for TT 2017 and Friday 1st to Friday 8th June for TT 2018.

Full school holiday dates to the end of summer term 2019 can be found at www.gov.im

            Iridology
            Robbie

A CNM Professional course in Iridology – analysis of the eye’s coloured iris – could throw open the curtains to a new level of diagnostic insight for you and your patients.

By helping to reveal a person’s underlying constitution, information displayed in the iris can suggest especially useful therapies to complement your specialism.

            About the course

Iridology is the study of the “iris”, the exposed nerve endings which make up the coloured part to the eye. The colours and the many structural variations which can be viewed in each iris, are the genetically determined evidence of your uniqueness. You will learn how to examine and analyse the iris in order to interpret signs that may indicate the client’s general constitution and their genetic susceptibility to particular conditions, and whether their organs and tissues are inflamed, toxic or under stress.

Iridology is a useful tool to the practitioner and student practitioner wishing to provide an individualised service to their clients by informing them of their innate strengths and weaknesses, empowering them to work within those limits.

            About the Course

            What is Iridology?

iStock_000005843344SmallThe iris of the eye is comprised of many thousands of individual fibres, amongst which are located nerve endings linked directly to the brain. In iridology, every part of the body that is supplied with nerves has its corresponding reflex area on the iris of the eye, allowing us to assess the organs and tissues in that sector. Iris signs can be interpreted by the trained iridologist to provide indications as to the patient’s general constitution and their genetic susceptibility to particular conditions.

Iridology is a useful tool to the practitioner wishing to provide a truly personalised and holistic service to their patients. By helping to reveal a person’s underlying constitution, information displayed in the iris can suggest especially useful therapies, or help to avoid inappropriate treatments that may be ideal for another patient with the same symptoms but a different constitution. Not only that, but iridology can be a vital tool for differential diagnosis: if a patient has an issue with their skin, for example, iridology can help to pinpoint whether it originates from a digestive problem, liver weakness or stress. The same applies to symptoms such as headache, generalized pain, and sleep problems. An iridologist is a facilitator of a patient’s journey toward perfect health, who can inform them of their innate strengths and weaknesses and empower them to work within those limits.

Iridology is used as part of the diagnostic repertoire that can complement both natural and orthodox medicine. Iridology is safe, gentle, and non-invasive, requiring none of the inconveniences of, say, undressing or drinking unpleasant fluid.

A CNM Professional course in Iridology – analysis of the eye’s coloured iris – could throw open the curtains to a new level of diagnostic insight for you and your patients.

The current challenges facing traditional colleges and universities — including higher tuition, budget cuts, and course shortages — cause many students to search for alternatives. With nearly three million students currently enrolled in fully online programs and six million taking at least one online course as part of their degree, online education has clearly become one of the most popular higher education alternatives. The continually improving reputation of online learning helped fuel its expansion, as initial skepticism faltered in the face of evidence showing that online learning can be just as effective as face-to-face education.

All of this means that students, from working professionals to recent high school graduates, find many reasons to take all or some of their courses online. The following list includes 10 advantages to online learning.

            1. Variety of programs and courses: From traditional four-year universities to completely online career colleges, higher education today offers a variety of options for students. This means that no matter what students study, from nursing to neuroscience, they can find the courses or programs they need online. Students can also earn every academic degree online, from a career certificate to a doctorate.
            2. Lower total costs: Online programs prove a more affordable option than traditional colleges. Though not all online degrees offer less expensive net tuition prices than traditional colleges, associated expenses almost always cost less. For example, there are no commuting costs, and sometimes required course materials, such as textbooks, are available online at no cost. In addition, many colleges and universities accept credits earned via free massive open online courses ( MOOCs ), the most recent advance in online education. These free online courses can help students fulfill general education requirements.
            3. More comfortable learning environment: Commercials that feature online students studying in their pajamas only skims the surface of one of the benefits of online education: no physical class sessions. Students listen to lectures and complete assignments sent to them electronically, with no need to fight traffic, leave work early for class, or miss important family time.
            4. Convenience and flexibility: Online courses give students the opportunity to plan study time around the rest of their day, instead of the other way around. Students can study and work at their convenience. Course material is always accessible online, making special library trips unnecessary. All of these benefits help students balance work and family commitments with their education.
            5. More interaction and greater ability to concentrate: WWhile contradictory evidence about the rate of online student participation versus participation in traditional courses exists, one thing remains certain: Online courses offer shy or more reticent students the opportunity to participate in class discussions more easily than face-to-face class sessions. Some students even report better concentration in online classes due to the lack of classroom activity.
            6. Career advancement: Students can take online courses and even complete entire degrees while working, while in-between jobs, or while taking time to raise a family. This academic work will explain any discontinuity or gaps in a resume as well. Also, earning a degree can show ambitiousness to prospective employers and a desire to remain informed and prepared for new challenges.
            7. Continue in your profession: Even if someone wants to complete a degree, it may not mean they want to leave their current job. For most students today, increasing college costs mandate that some students continue working while in school. The previously mentioned flexibility of online programs enable students to keep working while also pursuing academic credentials.
            8. Avoid commuting: During snowstorms and thunderstorms, colleges may cancel classes to avoid putting commuting students at risk of dangerous driving conditions. Rather than miss important class sessions, students in online courses can always “attend” by participating in discussion boards or chat sessions, turning in their work on time, and watching lectures or reading materials. Many students also find substantial savings on fuel costs with no commute for classes.
            9. Improve your technical skills: Even the most basic online course requires the development of new computer skills, as students learn to navigate different learning management systems (LMS) and programs. The participation skills students learn within their online courses translate to many professions, including creating and sharing documents, incorporating audio/video materials into assignments, completing online training sessions, etc. Some schools even offer students free laptops or iPads .
            10. Transfer credits: For college students who want to attend summer classes, but live too far from their colleges and/or work summer jobs, taking online classes from an accredited college and transferring the credits to their primary college can be beneficial. Students can earn college credit while still enjoying their summer vacation or fulfilling the responsibilities of their seasonal employment. Similarly, if a college or university does not offer enough open sections of a required course, students can take the course online at another college and transfer the credits.

Students in online programs can effectively manage their time, learn the materials, and complete assignments on their own schedules to name just a few benefits of online learning.

How Do Online College Classes Work?

LMS allow instructors to upload course information for easy student access. Common LMS include Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle, which provide accessible exchange of information between professors and students. If the department delivers a course asynchronously, degree candidates may view lectures and course materials, such as PowerPoint presentations and syllabi, at their leisure. Synchronous courses, however, require scheduled attendance through online chats or conferencing.

Learners submit course assignments through LMS by posting on discussion forums and submitting tasks through applicable links. To submit a research paper, for instance, a student using Blackboard could click on the particular assignment link to upload the finished product. Professors may provide feedback to the student through comments or email when using this LMS.

One issue that arises in the online classes versus traditional classes debate relates to test-taking, since professors and students communicate virtually. Professors do not oversee the process to ensure that no cheating occurs. To solve this issue, departments may require degree seekers to visit centers where a proctor can supervise the assessment. Another option involves using online proctoring services that monitor students as they work. If the learner exhibits any behavior that indicates cheating, the service may alert the school. This process permits degree candidates to take assessments away from campus, and also provides schools with confidence that students honestly earned their grades.

Are Online Classes Easier Than Traditional On-Campus Programs?

When weighing the pros and cons of online classes, students can take comfort in the solid education virtual learning delivers. Required coursework remains similar between traditional and online courses, with students completing exams, papers, presentations, quizzes, and projects in either format. Each of these assignments may come with a deadline that online or on-campus degree candidates must meet.

Online learners typically submit forum posts to engage in peer discussion, which acts as a substitute for in-person class attendance. Weekly readings and course lectures surface in both delivery methods, supplying on-campus and distance learners with solid course information. This combination makes online learning both effective and engaging.

Accreditation provides another comfort concerning the benefits of online learning since any accredited program, whether on-campus or online, boasts the approval of an accrediting agency. This detail means that any accredited online program meets the same standards as accredited on-campus options. Degree seekers can search for schools through the U.S. Department of Education’s website to determine accreditation status.

Online courses also come with technical aspects that traditional classes may not include, such as software and LMS options. By this estimation, online students not only encounter all mandatory coursework, but also gain experience with new technology as one of the advantages of online classes.

            Online College

What Are the Benefits of Going to College Online?

Enrolling in online college offers significant advantages over attending traditional campuses. The convenience of learning at home has been a major selling point for studying online. You can roll out of bed and go to class in your pajamas without any funny looks. You can attend class anywhere a computer can go—at home, a library or while traveling internationally. Online college classes are designed to fit your needs, while allowing you to continue working and tending to your other obligations. The idea is to easily blend education into your life, no matter your circumstances. In fact, the majority of students at online colleges are working professionals, young and old, looking for a way to switch fields, advance their careers or broaden their education. Online schools also give you the option of part-time or full-time learning, as well as a flexible schedule and reasonable demands. Although there are still deadlines and you must submit work online, you can attend class and do your schoolwork anytime, anywhere.

The quality of education at online colleges has continued to improve, and they have become an increasingly popular option. In the current economic recession, an increasing number of students are turning to online education. Higher fuel costs and rising unemployment have spurred  more people to seek online education . Stronger demand for online education has resulted in better quality offerings. In a study by the National Survey of Student Engagement , freshmen and senior online students were more likely than classroom-based students to:

            • Participate in course activities that challenged them intellectually
            • Participate in discussions about different cultures
            • Discuss important topics within their major
            • Have deeper approaches to learning in their course work

Another benefit of online education is affordability. In some cases, you can get the same quality education for a lot less money. Online students save thousands of dollars every semester in housing fees, commuting costs and other campus expenses that people enrolled in traditional colleges have to pay. Online courses have competitive tuition rates, and numerous scholarships, grants and student loans are available to help meet the cost. According to an article in U.S. News & World Report, increased competition among online colleges has prompted a rise in the quality of programs offered  and a drop in tuition prices.

            Inside Drudge's new look

Matt Drudge — who has kept his look steady even as everything else in media has convulsed — made a striking change Monday, beginning with a "NUKE YOU" banner headline: His photos, usually colorful amid the spare typewriter front, were suddenly black and white.

            • Drudge has recorded 11 billion visits to his site in the past year, and still breaks traffic records after decades as "the nation's assignment editor."
            • He sometimes makes one-day changes to his look and feel for special occasions: blue type on the Fourth of July, or green type on Christmas.
            • But when the noir look persisted this week, I had to ask him what was up.

Drudge instantly replied: "We have clearly entered a historic era. It's feeling like The Roaring 20's this autumn with tech valuations at such hysterical heights. The socials, like Instagram Live, are alive with the spirit of Warhol. The sound of the atom splitting is looming over Korea. What's old is new. So, black and white and read all over!"

Why it matters: Journalists these days talk constantly about how to capture and reflect the once-in-a-thousand-years events unfolding in front of our faces. Drudge once again was the innovator — with a retro look, and a prescient rationale.
