Brazil e-Visa Processing Time

When you plan your vacation, one of the first things you need to do is research your destination’s visa policy. You do not want to end up without all the required paperwork a week before departure. If you choose Brazil as your destination, there is good news for you. There are four countries whose citizens can obtain an electronic visa , which basically means you are no longer required to go to the diplomatic mission and get one. For now, only US citizens, Australians, Canadians and Japanese citizens enjoy this privilege, but inevitably in the future, the list will become longer.

Now, when you go to the embassy, you know from the start that you must arm yourself with patience. There may be a line, and then depending on the season, you may have to wait a while for your visa to be released. Fortunately, with electronic visas, you do not have to worry about that. You can have a Brazil e-Visa in as little as 4 business days and apply for it from the confort of your house or office.

What are the processing time options?

iVisa acknowledges the fact that there are people with different needs, which is why they created three excellent options respecting everyone’s time, and of course, budget.
iVisa offers you the following options to process your Brazil e-Visa. Please note that none of them include the e-Visa cost of 44.50 USD.

  1. Standard processing time – this is your cheapest option. It costs only 35 USD (or the equivalent in your state’s currency.) However, you must wait 10 days for your application to be processed. It is a relatively short amount of time compared to how long you have to wait at the embassy, and if you usually like to plan ahead, you should have no issues with getting your visa on time. iVisa recommends that you apply at least 12 days before your departure date. While delays are highly unlikely, it can happen, and you do not want to be caught off guard. However, you will be notified in case that happens. Keep in mind that iVisa works with the authorities that issue the visas, so if the mentioned authorities have delays, iVisa has its hands tied.

  2. Rush processing time – this option provides a shorter amount of waiting time. It costs more than the previous option, 65 USD to be more precise, but your application will be processed within 6 business days. Just like with the previous processing time, iVisa recommends that you apply 7-8 days before your departure so that if delays happen, you do not have to change your departure date.

  3. Super Rush processing time – this is an option destined to satisfy the needs of people who need their visa as fast as possible. Let’s say that you have family in Brazil and there is an emergency. Ten or six days may be too long to wait for your visa, which is why this option guarantees that your Brazil evisa will arrive within just 4 business days. Of course, you will be charged more for the urgency. This option will cost you 100 USD.

As you can see, the Brazil e-visa processing time is more than reasonable. You have options, which is something you do not see very often, and the urgency fees are not that high. Moreover, it would be quite tricky to get a Brazil visa in only four days by going to the embassy, which means that iVisa provides the best possible solution to your problem.

SA Statements & Interpretations of Statements of GAAP

Statements of Gaap Reference Numbers & SA Statements & Interpretations of Statements of Gaap

Statements of GAAP Reference Numbers

Statements of GAAP are the exact replica’s of relevant IFRSs approved by the Accounting Practices Board (APB). To indicate this, every Statement of GAAP has a dual numbering system to refer to both the IFRS and the Statement of GAAP numbers. In terms of the Companies Act No .71 of 2008, a body known as the Financial Reporting Standards Council (FRSC) was established and in consultation with the APB it was agreed that Statements of GAAP be withdrawn in respect of financial years commencing on or after 1 December 2012.

Please click here to access the Statements of GAAP Reference Numbers.

SA Statements & Interpretations of Statements of GAAP

In certain instances a need exists for the AC 100-series of Statements of GAAP to be interpreted for specific aspects, transactions or other issues that only occur in the South African context, as such aspects, transactions or other issues are not specifically or clearly addressed in either AC 100s or AC 400s. In such circumstances AC 500-series are issued to address those South African specific issues.

SOUTH AFRICAN STATEMENTS AND INTERPRETATIONS OF STATEMENTS OF GAAP:

  • AC 500 – Preface to South African Statements and Interpretations of Statements of GAAP (Issued November 2003) (17Kb PDF)
  • AC 501 – Accounting for Secondary Tax on Companies (STC) (Issued November 2003) (30Kb PDF)
  • AC 502 – Substantively Enacted Tax Rates and Tax Laws (Issued February 2006) (36Kb PDF)
  • AC 503 – Accounting for Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) Transactions (Issued January 2010) (150Kb PDF)
  • AC 504 – IAS 19(AC 116) The Limit on a Defined Benefit Asset, Minimum Funding Requirements and their Interaction in the South African Pension Fund Environment (Issued October 2010) (115Kb PDF)

Note: The FRSC has proposed changes to the Companies Act Regulations (Regulations) to make provision for the withdrawal date of Statements of GAAP (SA GAAP) and to create Financial Reporting Pronouncements (FRPs) which can be issued by the FRSC.  It was envisaged that the AC 500-series of SA GAAP would be issued as FRPs by the FRSC to ensure consistency and continuity of financial reporting, especially but not limited to listed companies.  As the Regulations have not been amended, SAICA’s Accounting Practices Committee (APC) has reissued those AC 500-series that remain relevant as SAICA Financial Reporting Guides, the only amendments being to delete references to SA GAAP and deleting the effective date and transition sections.  In the interim, the JSE has amended the Listings Requirements to make reference to the SAICA Financial Reporting Guides.

The SAICA financial reporting guides can be downloaded from the SAICA website

NSE software faces glitch; probe ordered to ascertain reasons

    NSE---BCCL
According to media reports, the software had got temporarily shut down for brokers and sub-brokers due to a technical problem.
New Delhi: Leading stock exchange NSE ( National Stock Exchange ) today witnessed a “disruption” in its web-based tool NOW, which allows traders to use their own trading software and hardware for trading on the bourse.

The NSE said there was no disruption in its own trading system and the ‘disruption’ in NOW, a shared computer to computer link tool used by trading members, has also been rectified and the cause for the problem was being assessed.

Neat on Web or NOW is a shared computer to computer link and risk management tool for trading members, provided by NSE’s subsidiary Dotex. This licensed trading software offers direct connectivity to the NSE for trade execution and data feeds through trading terminals, webbased browsers and mobile devices.

“NSE confirms there was no disruption to its trading system today. ‘NOW’ is a shared CTCL (Computerto-Computer Link) system which had a disruption which has been rectified and the system is now up and running,” an NSE spokesperson said in a statement.

“The members had alternate mode of connectivity during the disruption and hence trading was not disrupted. The reasons for disruption are being assessed,” the spokesperson added.

According to media reports, the software had got temporarily shut down for brokers and sub-brokers due to a technical problem. The exact quantum of the impact on trading activities due to the problem could not be immediately ascertained.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN IN SCHOOL TODAY Tom Paxton (Words/Music) Pete Seeger 1964 Also recorded by: Tom Paxton Chad Mitchell Trio And others What did you learn in school today Dear little boy of mine What did you learn in school today Dear little boy of mine. I learned that Washington never told a lie I learned that soldiers seldom die I learned that everybody's free And that's what the teacher said to me And that's what I learned in school today That's what I learned in school. What did you learn in school today Dear little boy of mine What did you learn in school today Dear little boy of mine. I learned that policemen are my friends I learned that justice never ends I learned that murderers die for their crimes Even if we make a mistake sometimes And that's what I learned in school today That's what I learned in school. What did you learn in school today Dear little boy of mine What did you learn in school today Dear little boy of mine. I learned our government must be strong It's always right and never wrong Our leaders are the finest men And we elect them again and again And that's what I learned in school today That's what I learned in school. What did you learn in school today Dear little boy of mine What did you learn in school today Dear little boy of mine. I learned that war is not so bad I learned of the great ones we have had We fought in Germany and in France And some day I might get my chance And that's what I learned in school today That's what I learned in school. “What Did You Learn In School Today?” lyrics

    Tom Paxton Lyrics

“What Did You Learn In School Today?”

What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?

I learned that Washington never told a lie,
I learned that soldiers seldom die,
    I learned that everybody’s free,
And that’s what the teacher said to me,
And that’s what I learned in school today,
that’s what I learned in school.

What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?

I learned the policemen are my friends,
I learned that justice never ends,
I learned that murderers pay for their crimes,
Even if we make a mistake sometimes,
And that’s what I learned in school today,
That’s what I learned in school

What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?

I learned that war is not so bad,
I learned about the great once we had had.
We fought in Germany and in France
And some day I might get my chance.
And that’s what I learned in school today,
That’s what I learned in school

What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?

    I learned our government must be strong;
It’s always right and never wrong!
Our leaders are the finest men
And we elect them again and again,
And that’s what I learned in school today,
That’s what I learned in school

      June Calendar

      Posted on by elizabethlau

Can you believe it’s already June?  This school year has just flown by!  Please find below our June Calendar.  Our last day of school is Thursday, June 29th and it is only a half day of school (8:40 – 11:30 a.m.).

      Early Dismissal – June 29th

      Posted on by elizabethlau

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being.  On Thursday, June 29, 2017, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day.  These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2017 only.  Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:40 a.m.  Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time.  Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

Greetings from our Trustee Mrs. Linda Aversa

      Message from our Trustee

As we near the end of the school year, I want to thank you for all that you do to strengthen our schools and communities. This is a good time to celebrate your child’s achievements over the past year.

One of our goals in the Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being through a culture and caring and learning.” That includes a culture that emphasizes engagement and positive relationships among all the members of the school community – students, staff members, families and community members.

You, as parents/guardians, are our most important partners when it comes to education. The support you have provided to your child throughout this past school year will help to strengthen our schools and make a difference to your child’s learning.

I encourage you to continue engaging your child in learning throughout the summer, and to help them to see the connections between what they are learning in school and the world around them. There are so many opportunities to do this over the summer, whether that’s planning a budget with your child, enjoying the natural beauty in York Region, reading a book or visiting local sites. Whatever your plans are this summer, I wish you all a successful end to the school year, and a safe and enjoyable summer.

March Greetings from our Trustee Mrs. Linda Aversa

      Posted on by elizabethlau

With spring approaching and the hours of daylight increasing, now is a good time to enjoy the outdoors and our natural environment. Did you know that our Board has five outdoor education centres , and students have opportunities to visit them and other outdoor learning spaces throughout their schooling? This is part of our commitment to giving students an opportunity to learn in and about the natural world. This learning supports students in gaining a deeper appreciation for nature and the importance of environmental sustainability.

“Modelling continuous environmental sustainability” is one of the goals outlined in our Board of Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan . We believe that we all have a role to play in reducing waste and protecting our environment. Our students, staff members and families continue to show leadership when it comes to supporting student learning and initiatives to reduce our ecological footprint.

Spending time outside as a family also provides a great opportunity to support and enhance your child’s learning outside of school. Whether visiting a park or museum, reading with your child in your home language or asking questions about their day at school – know that there are many ways you can support their education and that you are making a difference.

I hope you all have a happy and safe March Break and enjoy the warmer weather ahead.

      Message from our Trustee

We are now halfway through the school year.  This is a good time to reflect on all that your child has learned and to look at setting goals for the rest of the school year.

Our Board believes that student well-being and achievement go hand-in-hand.  One of our goals set out in the Board of Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being through a culture of caring and learning.”

The Ministry of Education has recently identified four priorities for well-being : positive mental health, safe and accepting schools, healthy schools, and equity and inclusive education.  As a Board of Trustees, we will continue to further work in all of these areas to support student well-being in line with these priorities.

There are many resources on the Board website to help support student well-being, including tips for talking about mental health , managing stress , packing healthy lunches and addressing incidents of bullying .

Creating a healthy, safe and welcoming learning environment is key to helping our students reach their full potential.  All of us have an important role to play in creating an environment that enables our students to thrive.

I wish you all the best for a healthy, happy and successful 2017.

      10.1.3. Overview of String Types

A summary of the string data types follows. For additional
information about properties of the string types, see
Section 10.4, “String Types” . Storage requirements are given
in Section 10.5, “Data Type Storage Requirements” .

In some cases, MySQL may change a string column to a type
different from that given in a CREATE
      TABLE
      or ALTER TABLE
statement. See Section 12.1.5.1, “Silent Column Specification Changes” .

In MySQL 4.1 and up, string data types include some features
that you may not have encountered in working with versions of
      MySQL prior to 4.1:

      • As of version 4.1, MySQL interprets length specifications in
character column definitions in character units. (Before
MySQL 4.1, column lengths were interpreted in bytes.) This
        applies to CHAR ,
        VARCHAR , and the
        TEXT types.

      • Column definitions for many string data types can include
attributes that specify the character set or collation of
the column. These attributes apply to the
        CHAR ,
        VARCHAR , the
        TEXT types,
        ENUM , and
        SET data types:

        • The CHARACTER SET attribute specifies
the character set, and the COLLATE
attribute specifies a collation for the character set.
          For example:

          CREATE TABLE t
          ( c1 VARCHAR(20) CHARACTER SET utf8, c2 TEXT CHARACTER SET latin1 COLLATE latin1_general_cs
          );

This table definition creates a column named
c1 that has a character set of
utf8 with the default collation for
that character set, and a column named
c2 that has a character set of
          latin1 and a case-sensitive
          collation.

The rules for assigning the character set and collation
when either or both of the CHARACTER
          SET
          and COLLATE attributes
          are missing are described in
Section 9.1.3.4, “Column Character Set and Collation” .

          CHARSET is a synonym for
          CHARACTER SET.

        • From MySQL 4.1.2 on, specifying the CHARACTER
          SET binary
attribute for a character data type
causes the column to be created as the corresponding
          binary data type: CHAR
          becomes BINARY ,
          VARCHAR becomes
          VARBINARY , and
          TEXT becomes
          BLOB . For the
          ENUM and
          SET data types, this does
not occur; they are created as declared. Suppose that
you specify a table using this definition:

          CREATE TABLE t
( c1 VARCHAR(10) CHARACTER SET binary, c2 TEXT CHARACTER SET binary, c3 ENUM('a','b','c') CHARACTER SET binary
          );

The resulting table has this definition:

          CREATE TABLE t
          ( c1 VARBINARY(10), c2 BLOB, c3 ENUM('a','b','c') CHARACTER SET binary
          );
        • From MySQL 4.1.0 on, the ASCII
attribute is shorthand for CHARACTER SET
          latin1
          .

        • From MySQL 4.1.1 on, the UNICODE
attribute is shorthand for CHARACTER SET
          ucs2
          .

        • As of MySQL 4.1.2, the BINARY
attribute is shorthand for specifying the binary
collation of the column character set. In this case,
sorting and comparison are based on numeric character
          values. (Before MySQL 4.1.2, BINARY
          caused was disallowed for the
          TEXT types. For
          CHAR and
          VARCHAR ,
          BINARY caused a column to
store binary strings and sorting and comparison were
based on numeric byte values. This is the same as using
character values for single-byte character sets, but not
          for multi-byte character sets.)

      • Character column sorting and comparison are based on the
character set assigned to the column. (Before MySQL 4.1,
sorting and comparison were based on the collation of the
        server character set.) For the
        CHAR ,
        VARCHAR ,
        TEXT ,
        ENUM , and
        SET data types, you can
declare a column with a binary collation or the
BINARY attribute to cause sorting and
comparison to use the underlying character code values
        rather then a lexical ordering.

Section 9.1, “Character Set Support” , provides additional information about
use of character sets in MySQL 4.1 and up.

      • [NATIONAL] CHAR[(M)]
        [CHARACTER SET charset_name]
        [COLLATE
        collation_name]

A fixed-length string that is always right-padded with
spaces to the specified length when stored.
M represents the column length in
characters. The range of M is 0
to 255. (1 to 255 prior to MySQL 3.23). If
M is omitted, the length is 1.

        Note

        Trailing spaces are removed when
        CHAR values are retrieved.

In MySQL 4.1, a CHAR column
with a length specification greater than 255 is converted to
        the smallest TEXT type that
can hold values of the given length. For example,
        CHAR(500) is converted to
        TEXT , and
        CHAR(200000) is converted to
        MEDIUMTEXT . This is a
compatibility feature. However, this conversion causes the
column to become a variable-length column, and also affects
        trailing-space removal.

        CHAR is shorthand for
        CHARACTER .
        NATIONAL CHAR (or its
        equivalent short form, NCHAR )
is the standard SQL way to define that a
        CHAR column should use some
predefined character set. MySQL 4.1 and up uses
utf8 as this predefined character set.
Section 9.1.3.6, “National Character Set” .

From MySQL 4.1.2 on, the CHAR
        BYTE
data type is an alias for the
BINARY data type. This is a
        compatibility feature.

MySQL allows you to create a column of type
CHAR(0). This is useful primarily when
you have to be compliant with old applications that depend
on the existence of a column but that do not actually use
its value. CHAR(0) is also quite nice
when you need a column that can take only two values: A
column that is defined as CHAR(0) NULL
occupies only one bit and can take only the values
        NULL and '' (the empty
        string).

      • [NATIONAL] VARCHAR(M)
        [CHARACTER SET charset_name]
        [COLLATE
        collation_name]

        A variable-length string. M
represents the maximum column length in characters. The
range of M is 1 to 255 before
MySQL 4.0.2, and 0 to 255 as of MySQL 4.0.2.

        MySQL stores VARCHAR values
as a one-byte length prefix plus data. The length prefix
indicates the number of bytes in the value.

        Note

        Trailing spaces are removed when
        VARCHAR values are stored.
This differs from the standard SQL specification.

        In MySQL 4.1, a VARCHAR
column with a length specification greater than 255 is
        converted to the smallest
        TEXT type that can hold
values of the given length. For example,
        VARCHAR(500) is converted to
        TEXT , and
        VARCHAR(200000) is converted to
        MEDIUMTEXT . This is a
compatibility feature. However, this conversion affects
        trailing-space removal.

        VARCHAR is shorthand for
        CHARACTER VARYING .
        NATIONAL VARCHAR is the
standard SQL way to define that a
        VARCHAR column should use
some predefined character set. MySQL 4.1 and up uses
utf8 as this predefined character set.
Section 9.1.3.6, “National Character Set” . As of MySQL 4.1.1,
        NVARCHAR is shorthand for
        NATIONAL VARCHAR .

      • BINARY(M)

The BINARY type is similar to
        the CHAR type, but stores
binary byte strings rather than nonbinary character strings.
M represents the column length in
        bytes.

This type was added in MySQL 4.1.2.

      • VARBINARY(M)

        The VARBINARY type is similar
        to the VARCHAR type, but
stores binary byte strings rather than nonbinary character
        strings. M represents the maximum
        column length in bytes.

This type was added in MySQL 4.1.2.

      • TINYBLOB

A BLOB column with a maximum
        length of 255 (28 – 1)
        bytes. Each TINYBLOB value is
stored using a one-byte length prefix that indicates the
number of bytes in the value.

      • TINYTEXT [CHARACTER SET
        charset_name] [COLLATE
        collation_name]

A TEXT column with a maximum
        length of 255 (28 – 1)
characters. The effective maximum length is less if the
        value contains multi-byte characters. Each
        TINYTEXT value is stored
using a one-byte length prefix that indicates the number of
        bytes in the value.

      • BLOB[(M)]

A BLOB column with a maximum
        length of 65,535 (216 – 1)
        bytes. Each BLOB value is
stored using a two-byte length prefix that indicates the
number of bytes in the value.

Beginning with MySQL 4.1, an optional length
M can be given for this type.
MySQL creates the column as the smallest
        BLOB type large enough to
        hold values M bytes long.

      • TEXT[(M)] [CHARACTER SET
        charset_name] [COLLATE
        collation_name]

A TEXT column with a maximum
        length of 65,535 (216 – 1)
characters. The effective maximum length is less if the
        value contains multi-byte characters. Each
TEXT value is stored using a
two-byte length prefix that indicates the number of bytes in
        the value.

Beginning with MySQL 4.1, an optional length
M can be given for this type.
MySQL creates the column as the smallest
        TEXT type large enough to
        hold values M characters long.

      • MEDIUMBLOB

A BLOB column with a maximum
        length of 16,777,215 (224
        1) bytes. Each MEDIUMBLOB
value is stored using a three-byte length prefix that
indicates the number of bytes in the value.

      • MEDIUMTEXT [CHARACTER SET
        charset_name] [COLLATE
        collation_name]

A TEXT column with a maximum
        length of 16,777,215 (224
        1) characters. The effective maximum length is less if the
        value contains multi-byte characters. Each
        MEDIUMTEXT value is stored
using a three-byte length prefix that indicates the number
        of bytes in the value.

      • LONGBLOB

A BLOB column with a maximum
        length of 4,294,967,295 or 4GB
        (232 – 1) bytes. Up to
MySQL 3.23, the client/server protocol and
MyISAM tables had a limit of 16MB per
communication packet or table row. As of MySQL 4.0, the
        effective maximum length of
        LONGBLOB columns depends on
the configured maximum packet size in the client/server
        protocol and available memory. Each
        LONGBLOB value is stored
using a four-byte length prefix that indicates the number of
        bytes in the value.

      • LONGTEXT [CHARACTER SET
        charset_name] [COLLATE
        collation_name]

A TEXT column with a maximum
        length of 4,294,967,295 or 4GB
        (232 – 1) characters. The
effective maximum length is less if the value contains
multi-byte characters. Up to MySQL 3.23, the client/server
protocol and MyISAM tables had a limit of
16MB per communication packet or table row. As of MySQL 4.0,
        the effective maximum length of
        LONGTEXT
columns depends on the configured maximum packet size in the
client/server protocol and available memory. Each
        LONGTEXT
value is stored using a four-byte length prefix that
indicates the number of bytes in the value.

      • ENUM('value1','value2',...)
        [CHARACTER SET charset_name]
        [COLLATE
        collation_name]

An enumeration. A string object that can have only one
value, chosen from the list of values
        'value1',
        'value2',
        ..., NULL or the
        special '' error value. An
        ENUM column can have a
        maximum of 65,535 distinct values.
        ENUM values are represented
        internally as integers.

      • SET('value1','value2',...)
        [CHARACTER SET charset_name]
        [COLLATE
        collation_name]

A set. A string object that can have zero or more values,
each of which must be chosen from the list of values
        'value1',
        'value2',
        ... A SET
column can have a maximum of 64 members.
        SET values are represented
        internally as integers.

      The Mouse Vs. The Python

      Python Programming from the Frontlines

Creating Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets with Python and xlwt

Python , PyWin32 Microsoft Office , Python Mike

There are a couple of ways to create Microsoft Excel spreadsheets with Python. You can use PyWin32’s win32com.client method, which was discussed in an old article a number of years ago or you could use the xlwt package. We’ll be looking at the latter in this article. You will learn how to create an Excel spreadsheet with multiple worksheets and how to create styled cells. Let’s get started!

      Getting xlwt

You will want to go and download xlwt so you can follow along. It is available on PyPI . If you have pip installed, then you can install it that way as well. Once you have the module, we will be ready to continue.

      Using xlwt

      xlwt_simple

The xlwt package is pretty easy to use, although the documentation is a bit sparse. On the plus side, the xlwt Github repository has lots of examples. Let’s create a simple Excel spreadsheet with a single worksheet:

      import xlwt
       #----------------------------------------------------------------------def main(): """""" book = xlwt.Workbook() sheet1 = book.add_sheet("PySheet1")  cols = ["A", "B", "C", "D", "E"] txt = "Row %s, Col %s"  for num in range(5): row = sheet1.row(num) for index, col in enumerate(cols): value = txt % (num+1, col) row.write(index, value)  book.save("test.xls") #----------------------------------------------------------------------if __name__ == "__main__": main()

Let’s break this down a bit. First off, we import the xlwt module and create a function called main. In the main function, we create an instance of xlwt.Workbook and add a worksheet via the add_sheet method. We label out worksheet with the text “PySheet1”. Then we create a nested loop to create 5 rows and 5 columns worth of content. Basically we write the Row / Column information to each cell. Then we save the file and we’re done!

      Creating a Styled Cell

      xlwt_styled

Now let’s refactor the code in such a way that we can add worksheets by using a function. We’ll also create another function that can create a worksheet with a styled cell:

      import xlwt
       #----------------------------------------------------------------------def add_sheet(book, name): """ Add a sheet with one line of data """ value = "This sheet is named: %s" % name sheet = book.add_sheet(name) sheet.write(0,0, value) #----------------------------------------------------------------------def add_styled_sheet(book, name): """ Add a sheet with styles """ value = "This is a styled sheet!" sheet = book.add_sheet(name) style = 'pattern: pattern solid, fore_colour blue;' sheet.row(0).write(0, value, xlwt.Style.easyxf(style)) #----------------------------------------------------------------------def main(): """""" book = xlwt.Workbook() sheet1 = book.add_sheet("PySheet1")  cols = ["A", "B", "C", "D", "E"] txt = "Row %s, Col %s"  for num in range(5): row = sheet1.row(num) for index, col in enumerate(cols): value = txt % (num+1, col) row.write(index, value)  add_sheet(book, "PySheet2") add_styled_sheet(book, "StyledSheet")  book.save("test2.xls") #----------------------------------------------------------------------if __name__ == "__main__": main()

Here we create an add_sheet method that accepts a Workbook instance and the name of the sheet. It will add a worksheet to the book with a cell that identifies what the name of the worksheet is. The add_styled_sheet works in much the same way except that it creates a styled cell with a message.

Creating a More Complex Styled Cell

      xlwt_styled2

In this example, we will use the original code to create the same 5×5 set of cells. Then we’ll also create a cell with a red background, a border and specific date format:

      from datetime import dateimport xlwt
       #----------------------------------------------------------------------def main(): """""" book = xlwt.Workbook() sheet1 = book.add_sheet("PySheet1")  cols = ["A", "B", "C", "D", "E"] txt = "Row %s, Col %s"  for num in range(5): row = sheet1.row(num) for index, col in enumerate(cols): value = txt % (num+1, col) row.write(index, value)  value = date(2009,3,18) fmt = xlwt.Style.easyxf(""" font: name Arial; borders: left thick, right thick, top thick, bottom thick; pattern: pattern solid, fore_colour red; """, num_format_str='YYYY-MM-DD') sheet1.write(6,1,value, fmt)  book.save("test3.xls") #----------------------------------------------------------------------if __name__ == "__main__": main()

Here we use a large string to specify to xlwt that we want to apply a style that uses the Arial font, has borders on all four sides of the cell and the fore_color is red. When you execute the code, you will find that fore_color actually means background color. Anyway, this syntax makes it very easy to style a cell’s contents. There are a lot of good examples in this PDF that the Python Excel website put out.

      Wrapping Up

Now you know how to use the xlwt package to create simple Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. You will notice that it create the spreadsheets using the older *.xls format. The xlwt module does not currently support the *.xlsx format. For that, you would probably have to work with PyWin32 or possibly the openpyxl project or XlsxWriter . Good luck and happy coding!
